Scientific Freedom and the Public Good

This panel will  discuss whistleblowing on scientific matters.

Topics will include censorship and suppression of federal science, dissemination of inaccurate science-based information, and the manipulation of scientific advice. Both the executive branch and industry have been accused of misusing and distorting scientific data to advance political objectives. We count on scientists to come forward to protect public and environmental health and safety when their research has been distorted or suppressed.

Across a wide range of issues—from prescription drug safety to climate change to mercury emissions, the effects of scientific censorship are having a direct affect on public safety.

Consider the stunning case of the prescription drug Vioxx. Fifty-five thousand Americans died because scientists at the Food and Drug Administration couldn't speak out.
